Teoxane Introduces a New Validated Clinical Scale to Assess Midface Volume Deficit
Teoxane announces the publication of the Midface Volume Deficit Scale (TMVDS) in Dermatologic Surgery. This validated, inclusive tool enables clinicians to reliably assess midface volume loss and track treatment outcomes across diverse patient populations.
Teoxane announces the publication in Dermatologic Surgery of the Teoxane Midface Volume Deficit Scale (TMVDS), a new validated tool designed to help clinicians reliably assess and track midface volume loss.
Developed with international experts, the TMVDS demonstrated high reproducibility and sensitivity to change, establishing itself as a robust instrument for both clinical research and everyday practice.
Validated scales are essential in aesthetic medicine to objectively measure treatment outcomes and set realistic expectations. The TMVDS provides a reliable and reproducible way to evaluate midface volume deficit across diverse patient populations.
Why a new scale was needed
Midface volume loss is a common sign of aging, often linked to changes in fat distribution and tissue depletion. While fillers are widely used to restore midface volume, physicians lacked a standardized, validated way to measure outcomes. The TMVDS addresses this unmet need with a simple, inclusive, and evidence-based 5-grade photonumeric scale.
Study highlights
- Developed with 159 subjects of diverse ages, genders, ethnicities, and skin types
- Five severity grades: from 0 (Absent) to 4 (Very Severe)
- Photographic validation (N=60): excellent reproducibility
- Live validation (N=80): strong reliability in real-world settings
- Clinical significance: evaluators detected a 1-grade difference in 80% of cases and a 2-grade difference in 100% of cases
A practical and inclusive tool
The TMVDS was designed with inclusivity in mind: 30% of live validation subjects had Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI, ensuring relevance across diverse populations. Real patient images in both frontal and oblique views make the scale easy to use during consultations while maintaining scientific rigor.
About the Teoxane Midface Volume Deficit Scale (TMVDS)
The TMVDS is a 5-grade photonumeric rating scale validated for assessing midface volume deficit severity and treatment-related improvement. It joins Teoxane’s growing portfolio of validated clinical outcome measures, including the Teoxane Lip Fullness Scale (TLFS) and the Teoxane Infraorbital Hollows Scale (TIHS), and is already being used in ongoing clinical studies to support evidence-based aesthetic practice.
